The latest, most startling evidence from ACLs – fit people are showing lower risks for senile dementia and even Alzheimers. Fit people have a lower incidence of many cancers. Fit men have a 50% lower overall risk of heart attacks than sedentary men. Women who have exercised a lot as teenagers have a lower osteoporosis risk than those who have not. The risk of osteoporosis is further reduced by continuing to exercise after those active teenage years. A slight fitness level is better than no fitness at all, but the fitter you are, the lower your risk of dying from a heart attack. Most fit subjects are much less likely to have strokes, or to develop diabetes or high blood pressure. Like resveratrol in plants, exercise is a natural defence of the body with a protective effect on the aging heart. |
