Lip Augmentation

Everyone has a different idea of what size or shape the perfect pout is. It is important to ensure that your lips are in proportion with the rest of your face, so start conservatively – you can always add to it later.

Several products may be used to augment lips, and some are permanent. Those made from a naturally occurring substance in the skin generally last 6 – 8 months, although first treatments often need to be topped up at 4 or 5 months (we forget how small our lips were). Thicker products last 9 – 12 months. All of these treatments last longer with each treatment. The permanent filler is made of polyacrylamide gel. Always try your new lips with a non-permanent filler first before trying the permanent filler as it can only be surgically removed.

Generally, more swelling occurs with your first treatment, so make sure you have a quiet day or two ahead. Subsequent treatments tend to produce less swelling. Usually a dental block is performed to numb the lips before treatment – this lasts 30 – 60 minutes. You will be sent home with after-care instructions and an ice-block to help reduce swelling.

There are 2 basic types of lip augmentation which may be combined.

PARIS LIPS

Paris lips are achieved by injecting a dermal filler into the outline of the lips, creating a more defined and youthful definition of the lip borders. Both top and bottom lips may be redefined although top lips only are more commonly requested. Paris lips help to stiffen the lip border and are recommended to be included in the treatment of perioral lines, also known as whistle lines or smokers’ lines. A small amount of perioral muscle relaxant will extend the life expectancy of Paris lips and help to reduce perioral lines.

LUSCIOUS LIPS

Luscious fuller lips are achieved by injecting the body of the lips with a dermal filler. Softer, less crisp injectables are more suitable for this. These products don’t go lumpy in the lips. More swelling and bruising however can be expected.
